6 Rules for Online Courses

Are you new to the whole online school scene? At Kansas Education Online, we know some people might be unfamiliar with getting an online education, but we can help introduce it to you. While the material you'll learn online is identical to that of a normal class room, the dynamics are often much different. Never coming face-to-face with your instructor can make certain aspects of the classroom more difficult, but all it takes is just a little adjusting. If you've never taken an online course before, you should read about these simple rules to be successful!

  1. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

All things considered, online schools and courses are still part of a fairly new technology, one that will have its bugs and difficulties. So if you have any problems, simply send an e-mail to your course instructor. They know that the online learning environment isn't perfect yet and they'll help you sort through the issue.

  2. Follow the Syllabus

One of the first things you'll receive from your course instructor is a syllabus. Typically, they outline what you'll be learning about and set up a tentative schedule. Follow it as closely as possible, don't fall behind and don't get too far ahead.

  3. Plagiarism Occurs Online too

Just like a normal class room, plagiarism is considered a serious violation online. Unfortunately, it probably occurs even more often online, where students can more easily "copy and paste" someone else's material. Be aware that many schools will permanently expel students for plagiarism, even on the first offense.

  4. Be Aware of Your Online Etiquette

Before you send any messages to your classmates or teachers online, make sure you double-check it. It's important to be aware of your tone and etiquette when speaking online, as it's easy for others to misinterpret what you mean.

  5. Participate in Your Class

It might be easy to avoid all communications with your fellow classmates or instructor online, but make an effort to participate! Reach out to others if you have questions and take part in any online discussions the class may be having. These days, participating in your class's virtual discussions may even be mandatory!

  6. Study!

Just like with any normal course you'd take at an actual school, studying for your online classes is directly correlated to getting good grades! Many students think they can take their online tests without studying and still get good grades by simply looking answers up in their textbooks. Course directors are more than aware of this and plan their tests accordingly!
